Feed Probiotics

Biotechnological Alternative to Feed Antibiotics
Posted 12 July 2019
Increasing the productivity of industrial livestock and poultry farming, while ensuring the environmental safety of food products, is becoming one of the most significant indicators. Antibiotics added to animal feed are then consumed by people with milk and meat. The problem of reducing the introduction of antibiotics into feed without a negative impact on the productivity of livestock production is crucial for modern farms. Given the vital need for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases of all types in farm animals, the development of new drugs ensuring biological defense of the body is very relevant.
Probiotic feed additives are considered a potential alternative to feed antibiotics. The use of probiotics is considered an essential element in raising healthy animals. These products improve immune status of animals, normalize intestinal microflora, which represents a natural barrier preventing the entry of pathogens into the body, and stimulate the body's defense systems. The use of probiotics is considered an essential element in the transition to environmentally friendly products worldwide. Currently available on the market foreign and domestic probiotic preparations are inferior in effectiveness to feed antibiotics, therefore, the work on increasing the biological activity of probiotic feed additives is relevant. One way to solve this problem is to balance the probiotic preparation with prebiotics and phytocomponents, a combination of the probiotic effect itself with the action of the prebiotic and the phytobiotic. Synbiotic preparations of this kind include BAFD ProStor and other feed additives produced on the basis of it.
Numerous experiments have proved that BAFD ProStor has a significant positive impact on the microflora of the digestive tract and bacterial fermentation of nutrients. The effectiveness of the use of the complex synbiotic BAFD ProStor preparation, including a promising probiotic Bacillus subtilis, together with prebiotics - beet pulp pectins, yeast cell walls and crude medicinal plant powders - Echinacea purple herb and milk thistle fruits, in the diet of young pigs was demonstrated in the experiments on feeding piglets (Nekrasov et al., 2014). It was shown that the observed increase in live weight in comparison with control animals was accompanied by the intensification of the digestion process. This, in turn, caused an increase in the size of epithelial cells of the small intestine and an increase in the size of the villi. These facts confirm the stated position that carbohydrate fermentation products stimulate the proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells (Frankel et al., 1994). It was proved that the cultures of the BAFD ProStor preparation were actively involved in microbial metabolic processes and stimulated the proliferation of bacteria, which led to the incorporation of nitrogen (from ammonia and other sources) into bacterial cells. The indirect effect of this action is manifested by the reduction in odour emissions on livestock farms and poultry farms and has a positive environmental impact. Today, given the high cost of feed raw materials, it is necessary to ensure optimal efficiency of its use, the most complete extraction of nutrients and energy in the process of production.

The most effective preparation for these purposes should be multifunctional and should combine several mechanisms of action on the biocenosis of the digestive system: displacement of opportunistic microflora, acidification of the chyme, cleavage of non-starch polysaccharides and proteins, promotion of the proliferation of intestinal epithelium, duplication of the functions of other feed additives, with which it is well compatible. Such duplication of the enzymatic and other functions of the digestive system is an important criterion for its stable operation under conditions of fluctuations in the feed and animal health status. To solve the complex problem of increasing the efficiency of feed use, providing biodefense for animals and poultry, the BAFD ProStor complex preparation has been created. This preparation has probiotic and antibacterial properties, provides increased digestibility of feeds, stimulates metabolic and immune processes, and increases the efficiency of formulated diet use. Numerous production tests and industrial applications have shown that the use of the BAFD ProStor synbiotic preparation is advisable for the prevention of gastrointestinal diseases, improvement of metabolism and resistance to adverse environmental factors and the overall efficiency of livestock and poultry farming. The probiotic component of BAFD ProStor provides biodefense for the body, prevents dysbiosis, stimulates metabolic and immune processes, increases digestibility of feed. Prebiotic components contribute to the growth of normal microbiota, normalize intestinal motility, adsorb toxins.
A special complex of enzymes provides increased assimilation of nutrients, biotransformation of mycotoxins by converting them into inactive forms. The complex of medicinal herbs exhibits immunomodulatory properties by stimulating the body's natural defense systems. BAFD ProStor fundamentally differs from other probiotic preparations available on the market today by the fact that it has increased biological effectiveness due to the formation of biofilms on a solid carrier. Obtaining a probiotic biofilm allows not only to ensure cell viability under adverse conditions of drying and granulation, but also to adapt the population of probiotic microorganisms to the conditions of functioning in the intestine. The immobilized form of probiotic cultures significantly increases the protection of microorganisms when passing through the acidic environment of the stomach, where conventional preparations containing lyophilized probiotic cells lose up to 90% of viability. The widespread use of BAFD ProStor in the leading farms of Russia and other countries confirms its high efficiency, shows the relevance, economic feasibility and prospects of its use in feed rations, in comparison with imported analogues. Currently, BAFD ProStor is supplied to many regions of Russia, as well as to the Republic of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Serbia, and EU countries. By biologizing agricultural production and the use of biotechnological feed additives, the mission of a significant reduction in the use of antibiotics and the production of premium organic products is accomplished, while ensuring an increase in technical and economic indicators of production.
